Back to Rugby
The Tri-Nations tournament is often considered a showcase of the best Rugby talents in the world. It is contested between three of the top 5 International rugby teams: Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Since the start of the tournament results show that New Zealand are the dominant Rugby force in the Southern-hemisphere, winning eight out of the twelve times the competition. The All Blacks have a winning record against every singly international rugby team, including England and are, according to IRB World Rankings, the second best team in the world, behind current World Champions South Africa. Moving on to the Springboks, the national team of South Africa. The Springboks are currently the IRB World Champions for the second time and have won the Tri-Nations tournament twice.
Last but not least, Australia’s Wallabies, are drawn on overall standings in the competition with South Africa. They have also won the Tri-Nations on two previous occasions and are ranked 5th in the IRB World rankings.
The Tri-Nations tournament was first introduced in 1996, where New Zealand’s All Blacks won. After some tweaking in the format of the competition in 2006, all the teams now play each other three times. The tournament starts in early June, after the completion of the Super 14 tournament, and ends in September.
