Grand Slam 4 – Late August > Mid September
The US Open is the fourth of the four big Grand Slam tournaments on the Tennis calendar. The tournament is actually a combination of two former tournaments: The US National Singles Championship for Men, and The US National Singles Championship for Women (which was formed much later than the men’s event). The men’s event was first held in 1881 at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island.
Since those days, the tournament has grown into one of the most sought after trophies in the world of tennis. It is now attended by millions of people and played by over 600 male and female competitors. It has an approximate $17million total prize fund with almost $1.5 million going to each of the singles tournament winners.
The main events of the tournament are held at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, a 24,000 seat location named after the African American tennis player who won the US Open in 1968. Only 3 years ago, in 2005, all the courts for the US Open were given blue inner courts and green outer courts. This was designed to aid the players and referees in seeing the ball more clearly, although many disagree with its effectiveness. As well as this all the courts are lit which has allowed constant television coverage for viewers in prime time slots.
