The 2007 Stan James World Matchplay begins on the 22nd July at Blackpool's Winter Gardens.

The tournament began in 1994, where it was won for the first and only time by a non Englishman. American, Larry Butler defeated Dennis Priestly 16-12 in the final. The Stan James World Matchplay is played in a legs format.

This years tournament will see current champion, Phil 'The Power' Taylor, begin the fight for his 9th title against Fleetwood's Wes Newton. Current World Champion Raymond 'Barney' van Barneveld makes his debut at the Winter Gardens along with Mervyn King. With an increased prize fund of £200,000 for this years competition, it will certainly be taken very seriously.

The Stan James World Matchplay is regarded as being the second biggest PDC Tournament. This tournament is made unique by the fact that there are no deciding legs. Instead, the match must be won by 2 clear legs.

Key Men To Watch

Raymond van Barneveld Current world champion, Raymond van Barneveld makes his debut at the Winter Gardens this year and will be looking for a debut victory. The world number two already has 7 titles to his name this year, but he will more than likely have to see off rival Phil Taylor if he is to make the World Matchplay an eighth.

Phil Taylor The most successful darts player in the history of the game will certainly be worth watching at this years tournament. The 13-time world champion has already hit a 9-dart finish against current world champion Raymond van Barneveld in 2007 and will be looking to see off the cool Dutchman to claim his 9th match play title and a cheque for £50000.
