Sports Personality Odds and Update
After his recent win over Mikkel Kessler, boxer Joe Calzaghe has shaken up the odds at the bookies for sports personality of the year. He has emerged as the bookie’s clear third-favourite for the BBC Sports Personality of the year title.
Before his win against the fancied Kessler, the Welshman was 33-1 for the trophy, and is now available at odds as short as 5-1. The final ten contenders are not announced until 30th November, and the public can vote for their favourite on the night of the show, live on Sunday 9th December.
Formula One rookie runner-up Lewis Hamilton has been favourite for the award since the early days of the last season, where he proved he would be a contender for the Drivers’ Championship. He is as popular as 1-3 at the bookies.
Proving boxing is increasingly becoming as sport to be reckoned with in the UK, the second favourite is Ricky Hatton, whose odds lie at around 4-1. Should Hatton win his ‘superfight’ against Mayweather in the early hours of Sunday morning, there will be no doubt that he will be a serious contender, his huge victory fresh in the minds of voters. Keen gamblers will be looking to make a profit here, possibly backing Mayweather in the fight and offsetting the bet by getting on Hatton to take the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Other BBC Sport Personality odds: PAULA RADCLIFFE 16-1 (35, English, Athletics), JUSTIN ROSE 20-1 (27, English, Golf), FRANKIE DETTORI 33-1 (36, Italian, Horse racing), JONNY WILKINSON 40-1 (28, English, rugby union), JAMES MCFADDEN 40-1 (24, Scottish, Football), TIM HENMAN 50-1 (33, English, Tennis).
