Promotion in the 2002/03 season brought top-flight football to Fratton Park for the first time since 1988, romping home with 98 points having scored 97 goals.

Under the guidance of experienced manager Harry Redknapp, Pompey confounded their critics in their first year in the Premier League by finishing 13th with the help of Redknapp's shrewd ability to find a bargain in the transfer market. Redknapp picked up experienced goalkeeper Shaka Hislop and used his links at West Ham United to bring in Bulgarian striker Svertoslav Todorov, whose eye for goal has made him a fans favourite on the south coast.

Despite an impressive first season, Portsmouth struggled in the following 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons, finishing 16th and 17th respectively. However a strong start to the 2006/07 season helped Pompey to a 9th place finish and expectation for a repeat performance this year will be high.
