No Winning Start for United

17th Jul 2007

Manchester United were made to settle for a draw in an entertaining opening game on their tour of the Far East after failing to beat Urawa Red Diamonds.

26 minutes into the first half, the home side took a shock lead with Hideki Uchidate deceiving Edwin Van Der Sar with a superb 30 yard effort, sending the Saitama Stadium into raptures and sending Uwara in 1-0 up at half time.

However in the second half United scored twice in a seven minute period to give themselves the upper hand. Just two minutes after the break, Darren Fletcher finished nicely to equalise for the Premier League champions and Cristiano Ronaldo looked to have sealed victory when Ronaldo showed some fancy footwork and comfortably cut inside from the left to drill the ball in from the edge of the box for United’s second of the game.

With only 13 minute of the game remaining, Shinji Ono showed great composure to cut inside his marker and coolly finish in the box to ensure a deserved draw for his side.
