McLaren and Ferrari row continues to heat up

2nd Aug 2007

An open letter to Formula One's governing body the FIA has reignited the spy row between rival constructors McLaren and Ferrari.

In the letter, McClaren boss Ron Dennis accused Ferrari of winning this year's Australian Grand Prix with an illegal car.

Kimi Raikkonen won the race in Australia, which was the first of the season.

"McLaren's reputation has been unfairly sullied by incorrect press reports from Italy and grossly misleading statements from Ferrari," Dennis states.

The row between McLaren and Ferrari came to the fore when McClaren chief designer Mike Coughlan was found to have nearly 800 pages of top secret Ferrari documents in his home. Coughlan has now been suspended.

The FIA world motorsport council (WMSC) found McClaren guilty of possessing confidential Ferrari information, but said there was "insufficient evidence" that the team has used it to their benefit. As a result McClaren and their drivers, Britain's Lewis Hamilton and Fernado Alonso, escaped punishment.
