Magpies agree fee for Smith

Newcastle United have agreed a fee of £6m with Premier League champions Manchester United for striker Alan Smith.

The Magpies are in talk with Smith, who has been attracted interest from a number of Premiership clubs, including West Ham United.

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce will hope the deal can be sealed before their pre-season friendly against Sampdoria on Saturday.

Six players have departed St. James Park this summer and with Keiron Dyer also set to leave, Allardyce will be keen to bring in new faces.
