Lawson Appointed Coach of Pakistan

16th Jul 2007

According to Australian media, Pakistan have appointed ex-fast bowler Geoff Lawson as the new coach of their national team.

Lawson stated that he would not have accepted the role if there were still shadows over the cause of his predecessor Bob Woolmer's death. It has been confirmed that Woolmer had died of natural causes after it was originally believed to have been a murder enquiry. Lawson claimed that this had put his mind to rest. The shortlist for the job had been whittled down to the last two, Geoff Lawson and former Sri Lanka and Bangladesh coach, Dav Whatmore, after the PCB ruled Richard Done out of the running for the job.

A lack of consistency for the Pakistan cricket team could be put down to them having as many as 8 coachs in the previous 11 years in Test and ODI cricket. Once again, the nerves of Pakistan fans are set to be tested as Lawson only has experience coaching New South Wales in Australia, which has lead to some critics claiming that the PCB have picked the wrong man for the job. However, Lawson believes that Pakistan is bursting with talented cricketers and simply need to gain the right mental focus to achieve the success they deserve.

Lawson has a busy time ahead of him when he arrives in Pakistan in August. He must prepare his new team for the Twenty20 World Cup in September as well as the series against India and South Africa.
