IAAF vs Pistorius: The Saga Continues

16th Jul 2007

The Athletics governing body, IAAF, have told double-amputee, Oscar Pistorius to calm down since he accused them of ruining his season.

Known by many as Blade Runner, South African Paralympic athlete Pistoius uses carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs to compete in the 100, 200 and 400m events. These blades have come under scrutiny as the IAAF is currently considering whether or not they give the sprinter an unfair advantage. If they are deemed to excessively aid the athlete then Pistorious could be banned from the 2008 Olympics. The IAAF passed a new law in March, banning anyone seen to be benefiting from artificial help.

Oscar Pistorius competed in the 400m in the British Grand Prix in Sheffield this weekend and has claimed there has been a communication failure somewhere along the line between himself and the IAAF. He also stated that the ban they implemented forced him to change his training schedule to a winter one, but when the ban was then lifted he had to return to his summer program, messing up his season. However, the IAAF claims he has never been banned.
