Hoggard pulls out of Test match

19th Jul 2007

England's bowling attack was in pieces last night after Matthew Hoggard pulled out of the squad through injury.

Hoggard's withdrawl from the first Test match against India, which started at Lords today, means that England are without any of their bowling attack that won the Ashes in 2005.

With Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff already sidelined, Hoggard suffered a back spasm that forced him to withdraw from the squad. He has been replaced by Hampshire pace-man Chris Tremlett.

Tremlett joins spinner Monty Panesar, Jimmy Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom to create a four-pronged attack which boasts just 37 caps between them.

England's bowlers will come up against one of the world's best batting line-ups and it is likely one-day captain and medium-pacer Paul Collingwood and part-time spinner Kevin Pietersen will be called into action.
