Hamilton wins Indianapolis Grand Prix

18th Jun 2007

Has anyone else been watching Formula 1 this season? To be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan until Lewis Hamilton began ruffling some feathers on the circuit this year! In his rookie year as a Formula 1 driver for McLaren the first Black English man in causing quite a storm after 7 races.

Hamilton surpassed even his own expectations and scoped his second Formula 1 win in just 8 days. The rookie beat out his team mate, Double World Champion, Fernando Alonso for the second time in as many races causing more tension in the McLaren team. After Hamilton won Montreal’s, Canadian Grand Prix last week Fernando dismissed the win by calling it ‘lucky.’ This statement caused conflict within the ranks as it is rumoured that Alonso is also complaining about the amount of attention the young Brit is receiving.

Hamilton said in an interview following Fernando’s comments that the situation ‘was difficult’ but attributed the extra attention to the fact that he had had a longer relationship with McLaren as he had been a member of the McLaren driving development group since his early teens. He went on to say that when Alsono became a member of McLaren the team went out of their way to make him feel at home.

Despite the tensions, there is no denying the fact that Hamilton has outclassed Fernando this season. Hamilton fought very bravely throughout the 73 lap race to keep Fernando from winning. What makes the win even sweeter for Hamilton is that he had never competitively raced on Indianapolis or Montreal circuits before. Hamilton now leads Fernando by 10 points after 7 with 10 races to go. Fernando spoke to reporters after the race on Sunday at Indianapolis and said that Hamilton’s success had happened very quickly and was a surprise to him. However, he said I have confidence with 10 races to go that the championship is still to be decided.

I think this will be one season to definitely watch! I know I won’t be far from the TV on July 1st when the battle it out in France.
