Brazil hammer Argentina for Copa America Title

16th Jul 2007

A somewhat under-strength Brazil side retained the Copa America in style after demolishing tournament favourites Argentina 3-0 in Venezuela.

Brazil took no time in getting started, scoring a fine goal through Real Madrid striker Julio Baptista in just the fourth minute. Brazil went two up in an embarrassing moment for Roberto Ayala, when the 34 year old centre back put a Daniel Alves' cross past keeper Roberto Abbondanzieri and into his own net. It was Alves who sealed the victory just after the hour when he finished off an intelligent counter attack.

Brazil have now won the title 8 times, with Argentina now having not won since 1993. The pre-tournament favourites never came out of the starting blocks and failed to show form that got them to the final. Argentina had some decent chances but failed to make anything of the oppurtunities.
