Woods and Mediate to face 18-hole play-off for US Open
16th June, 2008
After 72 holes of golf, we have reached the final two competing for the US Open title, after Tiger Woods holed a 12-foot putt on the last hole to draw with Rocco Mediate and force an 18-hole play-off.
The American pair will face another arduous 18 holes around Torrey Pines course on Monday, after each finished on 1-under-par. Lee Westwood was a challenger for the title, but a missed putt on the final hole saw him take third at level-par. It was a good tournament for the Europeans, with four of the top eight challenging the Americans. Robert Karlsson made a late charge, whilst Miguel Angel Jiminez had a consistent four rounds to finish joint sixth, four shots back at three-over par.
With Woods having won 14 of his 15 play-offs in competition, it is no surprise to see he is the huge favourite at best odds of 2/7 with Bet 365. However, his recently operated-on knee has been causing him problems, and another long walk may not do him any favours. Mediate is best odds of 14/5, which looks hard to extract any value.
Paddy Power give Woods a three-shot handicap for odds of about evens for both players. Had this been a normal round those odds would have been great value on Mediate, but with so much pressure on his shoulders he may well buckle. It could still be worth a few pounds considering Woods’ fitness. Compare odds on the US Open for free!
