Who will be the next manager of Newcastle?
30th September, 2008
If you'd asked Newcastle fans a few months ago how they thought this season would go, most would have been optimistic. With King Kev at the helm and a decent squad, Newcastle fans had every right to be hopeful. In spite of this after a few decent results, rumors where spreading that Keegan was frustrated with the lack of control he had over transfers and signings.
By the end of the transfer window the Magpies had not signed any major players over the summer. After a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, Keegan was reportedly fuming that he did not have full control over the footballing matters and the club. Then rumors spread that he was on the brink of leaving. Then meeting's took place over a 3 day period with Keegan finally stepping down from his position.
Fan's were angry with chairman Mike Ashley and Director of football Dennis Wise. In the eyes of the fans, Keegan was left with no choice but to quit. After all, what could a manager mange when he did not have full control over the team he wanted to field? Newcastle supporters vented their anger towards the board with numerous protests outside the ground.
So the search for a new manager began, and Mike Ashley announced he was actively looking to sell the club. So who are the favourites to take the job many would avoid? Having lost their last five games, some would say, anyone would be crazy to take the job.
However here is a list of the favourites and the betting odds:
Keegan 11/10 bet 365 - Could he return? Well if Ashley sells the club then the new owners will surely look to bring in the fans favourite.
Gus Poyet 8/1 Ladbrokes - Poyet has impressed as a coach and is rumored to be interested in a Permanent managerial job.
Alan Shearer 12/1 Sky bet- A true Geordie legend Shearer will be a popular choice with the fans however has no experience as a full time manager.
Joe Kinnear 11/2 Paddy Power - Brought in as a temporary boss last week, Kinnear has his work cut out, but if he impress's during his 6 week stint, could he be offered the job full time?
