Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, scored the winning goal as the reigning champions started the defence of their title with a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City at Old Trafford.
Rooney obtained the 99th goal of his Manchester United career. The centre forward knocked the ball into net after his initial header from Nani's cross bounced back off the post and into his path after 34 minutes had been played.
