US Masters Day 1 Review

11th April, 2008

The first round of the US Masters has been completed, and the Europeans remain well represented, with four Englishmen right in contention. Justin Rose is tied for the lead after day one with a four-under-par 68, level with Trevor Immelman. The South African had a bogey-free day with two birdies on each nine.

Also at the right end of the Leaderboard are the likes of Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey. Westwood, Brandt Snedeker and Brian Bateman sit one shot behind the leaders after each carded an opening round of 69.

Poulter had the crowd’s biggest roar of the day when he holed his tee shot on the 170 yard 16th hole. The eagle helped him on his way to an opening 70, which he said was one of the best rounds of his career.

Tiger Woods felt he was unlucky to card a level-par 72, which saw him par the first 12 holes, get two successive bogeys and then chip in for an eagle.

As a result of the first round, Rose has been chopped from 45/1 all the way down to 9/1. If you had a bet on him before the tournament, lay it now to lock in some profit – Rose’s average first round score is around 5 shots better than his average for the rest of the rounds. Tiger still remains favourite at 7/4 with Paddy Power, whilst other big movers include Westwood, from 90/1 down to around 19/1. Use our odds comparison service to find the best US Masters odds.
