UEFA Cup Round-up
13th March, 2008
Everton and Tottenham Hotspur were both cruelly dumped out of the UEFA Cup on penalties after winning their second-leg ties.
Both sides lost their first-leg games, Everton 2-0 away from home and Tottenham 1-0 at home. But then both responded well in the second-leg ties. Everton didn’t take long to get into their stride with Andy Johnson netting a deflection in the 16th minute to make it 1-2 on aggregate. But Everton continued to produce an excellent display, with Arteta grabbing a deserved goal in the 66th minute, smashing a sublime strike from 25 yards to take the match to extra time. No goals in the added 30 minutes meant it went to penalties, which the English side lost 4-2 after two saves from the Fiorentina keeper.
Spurs left it later to show their intent, with the first and only goal of the game coming from a Berbabtov volley on the 82nd minute. Extra-time in PSV was dominated by Tottenham who could have netted a couple of volleys but the match again went to penalties which the away side lost 6-5 to see their season effectively over.
According to our odds comparison service, Bayern Munich are huge favourites to win the UEFA Cup, with the only remaining English side Bolton the rank outsiders at a huge 63/1 with Party Bets.
