UEFA Champions League draw And Online Betting Odds
28th August, 2009
The five British clubs involved in this season’s Champions’ League group stages have found out who their opponents will be after the draw was made on Thursday in Monaco.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Scottish champions, Glasgow Rangers, all gained encouraging draws in Europe’s premier club competition. Last season's runners-up, Manchester United, will take on CSKA Moscow, Turkish side Besiktas and Wolfsburg from Germany in Group B.
Liverpool faces French champions Lyon, Italians Fiorentina and Debrecen. Chelsea has been drawn in group D and will play Porto, Atletico Madrid and APOEL Nicosia. Arsenal has been drawn with Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar, Olympiakos from Greece and Belgium’s Standard Liege. Glasgow Rangers will compete against Sevilla, Stuttgart and Unirea Urziceni.
The four teams from England were all placed in pot one and managed to avoid Spanish giants Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan who were in pot two. Real Madrid has A.C Milan in their group while Inter have defending champions Barcelona.
Manchester United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was very humble after the announcement and told the club's website: "These are difficult ties, especially the trips to Russia and Turkey. CSKA have developed strongly in the last few years, and games in Turkey are always difficult. We also know the quality that we're up against with Wolfsburg, with what they achieved in the Bundesliga last season." The group stages commence on the 15th and 16th of September.
