Theo Walcott puts the World Cup to the back of his mind

26th November, 2009

With the World Cup getting closer, the pressure remains on Fabio Capello to make the right decision, but whilst he concentrates on picking the right men, managers of other teams are telling players to forget about the World Cup until next summer!

Managers such as Arsene Wenger have insisted that concentration must be on current games and winning the leagues that they are in. He told players that whilst he understands the nerves and excitement are excessive at this time of year, it is critical that it does not affect their club performance.

Theo Walcott has promised to take Wenger’s advice on board and turn his attention away from the World Cup. Walcott has suffered a few injuries of late, but it still seems possible that he has a seat on the plane to South Africa as he returns from his recent knee injury. The England forward made his first appearance on Tuesday night for the last half an hour of the game which saw Arsenal win 2-0 against Standard Liege.

Walcott explained, “You want to play well for your country and the summer will come if you have a great season. The best way is just to take every game as it comes and not look into the future because you never know what is going to happen. I am just going to concentrate on every single game until the end of the season and see where it takes me.”

Bookies are offering odds of 11/10 that the striker will secure a place in the World Cup 2010. Blue Square has price Walcott at 25/1 to be the top goalscorer if he is selected to go to South Africa and England are 6/1 with Blue Square to be crowned the winners of the World Cup 2010.
