The Rise of the Special Punter
5th January, 2009
Betting punters are slowly becoming more and more diverse. Punters today take the form of students, house-wives, professionals and the elderly. No more old man spending his pension in the bookies or young builder put 20 on the horses.
This change in punters can be clearly seen with the change and rise in special betting. While sports betting has continued to grow, special betting, such as reality TV, celebrities life, current affairs, has risen in the last five years.
This change can be partly attributed to the internet. With more and more punters deciding to bet online the industry has had to adapt with the times, providing punters with a greater range to fulfil their betting requirements.
One of the most topical special bets is currently the likelihood of Katie Price and Peter Andre’s marriage and whether or not 2009 will be the year they divorce. Others being whether or not Robbie Williams will join ‘Take That’ on their 2009 tour.
Totesport spokesman Mike Oxley said, “The amount of money that we have seen on the market compared to other sports and racing specials tends to show how times are changing in the betting industry towards punters punting specials and being interested in the celebrity lifestyles.”
Other special betting for 2009:
Girls Aloud to split up in 2009 5/6
Robbie Williams to perform live with Take That on 2009 tour 11/10
Simon Cowell to quit as X Factor judge in 2009 5/2
Kelly Brook and Danny Cipriani to get married in 2009 20/1
A sports star to win strictly come dancing 2009 6/5
