The Players Championship Preview and Betting

Today sees the opening round of The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass. Would-be favourite Tiger Woods will not be competiting thanks to a knee injury, which sees world number two Phil Mickelson head the field. Mickelson thinks that the injury will boost the players this week: "When he's in the field that's the first thing you look at on the leaderboard - what did Tiger shoot, where does he stand," he said. "That's obviously going to be different when he's not in the field. You don't have that thought."
World number seven Jim Furyk sees it differently though, saying that he will look at the tournament no differently without Tiger: "I don't think we look at this event and say, 'He's not here, now I have a better chance of winning.'
"You worry about yourself and your own game and getting yourself ready. I'm not really looking at the field."
Either way the odds for the winner of the championship are now wide open, Mickelson being the favourite at 12/1, with Adam Scott the next closest competitor at 14/1 with BetterBet. There are then a number of players between 20/1 and 25/1, including some heavily-tipped ones including Harrington and Ogilvy.
Our tipster suggests backing the in-form Adam Scott, along with Furyk and Anthony Kim. Read the golf betting tips in detail.
If placing each-way bets on The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass, bet with Boylesports or Paddy Power, who are both offering a payout on six places on these bets.
