The Open Championship Betting Preview and Odds

14th July, 2008

The British Open Championship has come round again, and with the world number one Tiger Woods out with a knee injury, the betting has been blown wide open.

Despite the well-documented American domination of the tournament, there is a distinctive non-American feel to the favourite, making up only two of the top 12 favourites. The Royal Birkdale course has never had a Englishman win at an Open Championship, with four Americans and three Australians claiming all of the victories.

Garcia (11/1) heads the betting after his play-off loss last year, with Els (15/1), Mickelson (18/1) and Westwood (18/1) making up the top four. Last year’s winner, Harrington, is just 20/1 to make it two-in-a-row. Furyk is the only other American to join Mickelson in the top 12, with Rose, Scott, Ogilvy, Singh, Karlsson and Donald all chalked up as possible contenders.

There are a number of specials on offer from various bookmakers for The Open Championship betting, including ¼ odds on six places for each way bets at Paddy Power. Sky Bet have a wide range of markets available on the Open Championship betting, including:

  • No Hole in One 4/7
  • Hole In One 5/4
  • European 1st-2nd 5/1
  • English Winner 6/1
  • Left Handed Winner 10/1
  • A Local Qualifier to Win Open 200/1

Names which should be there or thereabouts at the Royal Birkdale event include the likes of Jim Furyk, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Hunter Mahan, and all look a decent each-way bet. The Spanish should be able to continue their excellent summer of sport if either the favourite or Jimenez can do what we everyone knows they can. Whilst majors may not be their specialities, they both continually place well.
