Glorious Goodwood kicked off on Tuesday with some memorable performances, most notably from Harbinger in the Gordon Stakes, but day two promises to be even better and the highlight is a mouth-watering renewal of the Sussex Stakes.
Three-year-old filly Ghanaati, so impressive this season when winning both the 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes, bids for a hat-trick at the highest level but faces stiff from competition from both Rip Van Winkle and Paco Boy.
Barry Hills' Classic winner is rated a 5/2 chance with Paddy Power but she will have to be at her best if she is to prevail, despite receiving a healthy sex and age weight allowance from her main rivals.
Rip Van Winkle, looking to give trainer Aidan O'Brien a fourth victory in the prestigious one mile contest, has found the top class Sea The Stars too good on each of his three starts during his three-year-old campaign to date and while he does not face a rival of John Oxx's inmate's calibre could prove inconvenienced by the drop back in trip.
The son of Galileo was readily outpaced at Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas, when staying-on into fourth, and may be found wanting for a turn of foot in Group 1 company over 8f.
Paco Boy, who disappointed at Newbury in the Lockinge on soft ground over this trip, swept to victory in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on his penultimate start, dispelling any stamina doubts in the process, and rates as the biggest danger to Victor Chandler's 13/8 favourite.
Richard Hannon's stable star has to concede weight to his two closest rivals in the betting but his talent is not in question and he looks likely to give Ghanaati most to do in what appears to be a three horse race on paper. Lord Shanakill, who can be backed at 14/1 with Blue Square, appears best of the rest.
