Staunton Sacked by FAI
24th October, 2007
Steve Staunton has been removed as Republic of Ireland's national manager by The Football Association of Ireland after a string of poor results ended any hopes of Euro 2008 qualification.
Staunton holds the country's record for most international appearances with 102, and took charge of the team in January 2006 with no previous managerial experience. He was in charge for 17 games, and this month's 1-1 draw against Cyprus seemed to be the final straw. The Republic of Ireland now sit third in Group D, but having played a game more than other opponents, could find themselves fifth in the group on 16 points from 11 games. Germany and Czech Republic both have 23 points to their name and will go through to the finals with two games in hand. The Czech Republic are favourite to finish the group as winners, at 1/2, whilst Germany are 6/4 at Paddy Power. Remember to use our free live odds comparison service to find the best odds.
