Spurs win the Carling Cup
25th February, 2008
Tottenham Hotspur have won their first silverware in nine years after beating the holders Chelsea in the Calring Cup final.
Spurs started far more positively, creating chance after chance but failing to really trouble the keeper. It took a while for Chelsea to really create any openings, but after giving away a number of free kicks not far outside the box, Tottenham were made to pay for the squandering of their chances when Drogba converted to make it 1-0.
Chelsea looked as if they would hold on for a 1-0 victory in a typical well-drilled manner, however a dubious penalty decision turned the game. As Bridge and Lennon tried to control the ball in the box, the ball bounced up and the linesman flagged for handball against Bridge. He spotted that Bridge’s arm did move towards the ball, but the penalty was somewhat harshly given and duly converted by Berbatov.
Spurs then went on to create more chances at the end of the game, but it finised 1-1 in normal time.
It took only four extra-time minutes for Tottenham to find the eventual winner, with Cech managing to punch a cross onto Woodgate’s head leaving the ball trickling towards the empty net.
Chelsea did manage to put pressure on and get a few shots in with the introduction of Joe Cole and Kalou, but Spurs held on for a famous victory.
