Sports betting tips for the weekend 2nd and 3rd February

Ram raid

  • Football

After the FA Cup 4th round last week its back to League action this weekend.

Birmingham will be disappointed if they fail to secure all the points against Derby on Saturday but, especially now that the American take-over has finally been completed and the club's future looks brighter, the Rams will be in good spirits. They could prove tougher than expected and frustrate the Blues by sharing the spoils.

Liverpool are going through a sticky patch on and off the field but they should still carry far too many guns for floundering Sunderland.

Man City have yet to lose at Eastlands this season but Sven's men have looked out of sorts lately and high flying Arsenal can end the Citizens' unbeaten home record.

Portsmouth were lucky to get past Plymouth at the first time of asking in the Cup last Saturday but they are unlikely to get any change out of the ultra efficient Chelsea.

Reading gave Man Utd plenty to think about in their last home match and they are fancied to see off Bolton who have picked up just 3 points on the road so far this season.

Wigan are hovering above the relegation places and desperately need to get something out of their game with West Ham but the Irons are playing really well away from home and this one could end in a draw.

Tottenham were much closer to Man Utd than the 3-1 scoreline at Old Trafford suggests in the Cup and the Lillywhites can gain revenge on the Red Devils on their own patch.

Berbatov, who his a post last weekend, is worth backing to score this time.

Middlesbro are in good form and they can emphasise the huge task Kevin Keegan has of turning Newcastle around by beating the Magpies on Sunday.

Keegan's fellow Premier League comeback boss Roy Hodgson could enjoy his Sunday better as his Fulham team are capable of sharing the points with Aston Villa.

Wes a wiz

  • Super Bowl XLII

The New England Patriots are a best priced 2-9 to beat the New York Giants in the Super Bowl final. The Giants are a very very good side but the Pats are a great team and they should complete the perfect season in Phoenix on Sunday night. New England's legendary quarterback Tom Brady is a red hot favourite at 1-3 to be the most valuable player (MVP) but he is such an obvious choice that there could be much better valued in going for his team mate Wes Welker at 16-1. The wide receiver is rated the best pound for pound player in the NFL and the former Dolphin has been in stupendous form this season. Welker, who is as short as 8-13 to score a touchdown at anytime, also looks good value at 8-1 to score the first touchdown.

A third helping of Swede

  • Golf

Henrik Stenson has rewarded our each-way investments by finishing second the first two legs of the "Desert Swing" and we are not going to desert the Dubai based Swede in the final event, the Dubai Desert Classic, this week. However, with Tiger Woods and Ernie Els in the field we mustn't go in head down on Stenson. The odds are far from generous about him at 6-1 in the betting without Woods market and just 10-1 in the outrights. Colin Montgomerie played very solidly in the Qatar Masters to finish sixth last week and he is worth a small each-way punt in both markets to go well again.

With Tiger Woods in the Gulf, Phil Mickelson heads the betting for the FBR Open at TPC Scottsdale in the USA. Lefty is a former winner of the tournament and he showed he was in good nick when tying for sixth in the Buick Invitational last week. I wouldn't put anyone off backing Mickelson but am going to suggest we stick with Justin Leonard, who did us proud when fifth in the Buick. Ryuji Imada, who was second to Woods last week, is also worth each-way support at 66-1.
