Silverstone 'worst F1 track'
21st November, 2007
Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has described Silverstone as the worst circuit in the sport’s season. He has repeatedly warned that the circuit is not up to today’s high standards, and is calling for investments from the government to sort the problem: "Britain is supposed to be the heart of Formula One racing and our circuit is bottom of the list," he said. "With a tiny percentage of what the government are wasting on the Olympics, they could support Silverstone."
With the contract to stage the race at Silverstone expiring in 2009, the heat is on to make improvements or lost the British Grand Prix. A £25million redevelopment of the track has been approved by the British Racing Drivers’ Club, the owners of the circuit, but the move may be too late. Ecclestone went on to explain: "They know exactly what they have to do. They've known for at least five years. It's not for us to say where the money comes from but it's strange because most of the events we have now are supported by governments."
The F1 supremo also questioned why a planned Grand Prix on the streets of London has not progressed to the next stage: "Things were sorted out very nicely in London. Mayor Ken Livingstone was very helpful and we laid a plan out of what we could do. It would have happened, it was just a question of where the money was going to come from. It would cost a small amount compared to what they're spending on the Olympics. If they look at it from a pure business point of view, all the revenue it would bring in, I just don't understand why it isn't happening."
Raikkonen remains slim favourite to take the Drivers Championship 2008, at 6/4, whilst Hamilton is also 6/4 at some bookmakers. Alonso has slipped to a huge 12/1 at Ladbrokes, sure to attract a few punters to have a take a risk with the highly experienced previous championship winner.
