21st January, 2008
Mark Selby thrashed Stephen Lee 10-3 in the Masters final to become the fifth person tti win the Masters on his debut. The Leicester 24-year-old showed class and nerve to record the impressive victory over the far more experienced Lee.
The provisional world number five said: "I handled the pressure at the Crucible and that helped me cope at the Masters. I got to the final in Sheffield last May and now I have won the Masters - I will take that."
The "Jester from Leicester" turned pro in 1999, but is now firmly at the front of snooker as part of the new breed of young players establishing themselves in the sport. His loss to John Higgins in the final of the World Snooker Championship last season was when he really came to the public’s attention.
Selby now finds himself £155,00 richer, including the extra £5,000 for matching the highest break of the tournament – in the tournament-winning frame.
