Ryder Cup Betting
15th September, 2008
The Ryder Cup takes place this weekend at the famous Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville Kentucky. The historic event has been played every two years since its formation in 1927, and was competed by only British and American golfers. However due to the US dominance over the Brit's, in 1985 the inclusion of mainland European players created the first team Europe.
Since the change, the US have struggled to adapt having only won the cup three times since the change. Europe have won the last three Cups and will be looking to repeat the success they had two years ago in Ireland. However the Americans are on home soil, will have the support and desperate to restore some pride in US golf.
Nick Faldo captains the European side who will face Paul Azinger's American team. The Ryder cup is loved by those who don't even follow golf, due to its dramatic scoring/points system. The events consist of eight foursomes matches, eight fourball matches and 12 singles matches.
The foursomes matches consist of four golfers (2 European 2 US) with each team having their own ball with the partnerships taking alternate shots. The team who has the lowest team score for each hole wins half a point. The Four ball matches are the same however each player has their own ball and the lowest scoring player for each hole wins half a point. Singles matches then take place between the teams players.
There are several excellent betting opportunities for punters. The great thing about the Ryder Cup is that you don't need to know a lot about golf to place bets. The strategies used by players are very different to those used in individual tournament. Being able to play with a partner well in the foursome matches is key to winning the cup and this is the area where Europe have dominated in recent years.
