Rangers Beat Sporting into Semi-Finals
11th April, 2008
Glasgow Rangers have secured their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup with a 2-0 win over Sporting Lisbon. The Scottish side produced an efficient counter-attacking display which saw them make the most of their limited opportunities, as the home side wasted chance after chance.
The first half saw Sporting hit the post and a number of long-range strikes well saved. The pressure from the home side continued in the second half, and they should have made it count on a number of occasions. Rangers made them pay with a precise counter-attack that ended in a goal from Darcheville.
This meant Sporting needed two goals thanks to the away-goals rule and as they went on the attack, they lost their shape and allowed Whittaker to finish off the night with a superb solo effort.
Rangers now face Fiorentina in the next game, whilst favourites Bayern Munich face underdogs Zenit. There will be plenty backing the Scottish side to win the UEFA Cup at odds of 11/2 with Ladbrokes, as there is little value in backing the Germans at evens, according to our odds comparison service.
