Punter looses 170,000 after forgetting to place bet.
26th October, 2009
Malcom Harper from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, spent an afternoon in his local Betfred bookmakers watching the horses and planning to place a few bets. The 48-year-old looked set for a good afternoon as he celebrated his first winning horse, Tres Amigo. He became hopeful for the rest and when he discovered he had won £170,000 was uncontrollably excited.
However, all of this excitement confused the manager of the bookies who questioned Mr Harper about his excitement. It was soon after this that Harper checked in his coat pocket and found that he had written out his bets, but not handed in the betting slip, meaning it was irrelevant that his horses had won as he wasn’t getting anything for it!
After the event, the married father of one looked back on his careless behaviour and explained that it had been busier than normal and he had obviously got distracted. He went on to say that. “I’d been planning what I might spend my money on but when I discovered the slip was still in my pocket, I felt sick.”
Harper would have won himself £142,282 for his £1 each super yankee, alongside a 20% bonus, which has meant that the struggling singer, who auditioned on Britain’s Got Talent, has walked away short changed of £170,000!! Let’s hope that this lesson has taught him to always place his bets before sitting down for a cup of tea, in an attempt not to lose another life changing sum of money!
