Barry Hearn’s successful Prizefighter boxing series returns on Friday night at London’s Olympia National Hall. The eight participants will all fight for the £32,000 prize in the 140 pound light-welterweight division.
The competition will be fierce and shall be headed by former WBA Champion of the world Gavin Rees. Also the line-up features former British and European champions as well who are looking to revitalise their respective professional careers. The competitors in the tournament alongside Rees will be Ted Bami, Colin Lynes, Michael Grant, Young Mutley, Jason Cook, Barrie Jones and David Barnes.
The format of the tournament is as follows: there shall be four first round matches with the winners progressing to the semi-finals and then the finals. Organiser Barry Hearn told BBC Sport "The format works, the punters are buying the tickets and the ratings are huge so it's easy to see why it's going from strength to strength," admitted Hearn.
“It's interesting as the reputation of Prizefighter grows; the fighters are the ones who are increasingly phoning us. They are phoning us for a variety of reasons. Most have been great fighters, former World, European and British champions, who are looking to re-establish themselves for whatever reason - Audley Harrison being a point in case - and Prizefighter gives them the opportunity of doing that.
The pick of the first round fights sees Rees fight former European Champion Ted Bami, while another former European Champion Colin Lynes will clash with former British Champion David Barnes.
To win Prizefighter Gavin Rees is 11/4 with Sky bet while Colin Lynes is 7/2 with Betfred. David Barnes is 5/1 with a host of bookmakers.
