Premier League Weekend Review

The weekend’s football saw plenty of goals and controversy, with 30 goals across the 10 premiership games. Top-of-the-league Arsenal recorded an impressive 5-0 win over Derby, with Adebayor netting a hat trick for the Gunners. Diaby and Fabregas also scored in the victory.

Manchester United heaped the misery on to Chelsea with a controversial 2-0 win over Chelsea. Mikel was sent off in the first half after a slightly late challenge on Evra, where a yellow would easily have sufficed. Chelsea battled on, but Tevez scored in the third minute of first-half added time, after two minutes had been signalled. Chelsea were again hard to break down in the second half, making some decent moves, until late in the second half, Ben Haim made minimal contact with Saha in the box, and scored the resulting penalty.

Elsewhere, Michael Owen limped off an hour into Newcastle’s 3-1 win over West Ham. Viduka netted a brace, with Dean Ashton levelling in between. N’Zogbia then finished the game off after 76 minutes from a Martins cross.

Bolton moved off the bottom of the table with a 1-1 draw with Tottenham at home. Robbie Keane gave Spurs the lead on 34 minutes, with Campo levelling the match just 5 minutes later.

Aston Villa managed a 2-0 win over Everton, with Carew and Agbonlahor scoring for the home side.

Blackburn saw their undefeated start to the season ended at home to an impressive Portsmouth, with Kanu getting the only goal of the game.

In a six-goal thriller, Danny Murphy came off the bench to snatch a 3-3 draw for Fulham against Manchester City. Davies headed home after 11 minutes, when Petrov levelled later in the first half. Bouazza restored the lead with an excellently taken free-kick, but then saw Mpenza level soon after. Petrov then scored his second of the game with a low drive that was lucky to lucky to get through. Murphy then came off the bench to finish coolly from 12 yards.

Torres was again left on the bench for an hour in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at Anfield with Birmingham. Bentiez started Babel instead of the £26m striker, which looked to be a bad decision come the end of the game.

Reading recorded a much needed win with a 2-1 victory over Wigan. Kitson scored and then turned provider for Harper to score a glorious winner, after Koumas’ free-kick hit the underside of the bar and was headed in for the equaliser by Marcus Bent.

In the battle of the young managers, Middlesbrough drew 2-2 at home to Sunderland. In the thrilling 125th Tees-Wear derby, Miller scored an 89th minute equaliser for Sunderland. Leadbitter had put Sunderland in front within two minutes. Arca and Downing both scored impressive goals for Middlesbrough.
