Portsmouth win FA Cup Final

19th May, 2008

A single goal was enough for Portsmouth to win the FA Cup final against Cardiff City on Saturday. Kanu netted the only goal of a fairly drab affair at Wembley, in which Portsmouth lifted their first FA Cup trophy since 1939.

The goal came from a John Utaka cross which was fumbled by Cardiff goalkeeper Peter Enckelman. The ball found its way to the Nigerian who knocked the ball in for the all-important goal eight minutes before half time.

It was a big moment for the Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, who has now won the first major trophy of his career, and it was clear how much he was enjoying it.

The first half was open lively, with Cardiff well in the match and creating a number of chances. David James was alert and showing some of the form of his excellent Premier League campaign, keeping Cardiff at bay. After the goal and throughout the second half, Portsmouth did what they needed to, breaking up the play and dominating possession.

Next season will now be Portsmouth first time playing in Europe, as the FA Cup final win gives them automatic entry into the UEFA Cup.
