Police raid on Redknapp’s home ruled unlawful
23rd May, 2008
High Court judges have ruled the police raid on Harry Redknapp’s home as unlawful, ordering The City of London Police to pay £1,000 in damages plus part of the Portsmouth manager’s legal costs.
Redknapp was arrested by police following an investigation into corruption in football. Mr Redknapp then went on to start legal proceedings after the raid on his Dorset home. Judges have said the warrant for the raid was issued unlawfully by the City Of London Magistrates' Court.
It has been a rollercoaster few months for Mr. Redknapp and his family, dealing with the corruption probe, being arrested, the death of close family members and winning the FA Cup.
Solicitor for the Redknapps, Mark Spragg, said: "This was an outrageous abuse of power by the police who ignored the rule book and executed an unlawful search warrant at 6am in the full glare of media coverage which they no doubt organised or at least did not discourage."
The investigation into corruption is still underway, with nine people currently on bail in connection with the inquiry.
