After the glitz and glamour of last Sunday’s Bafta Awards attention has been turned to what’s really important, the dresses!
British designers were very well represented at the ceremony with designs from the likes of Stella McCartney and Burberry gracing the red carpet. Designs from the late Alexander McQueen were also worn by Sam Taylor Wood and Jamie Winston.
Fellowship award winner Vanessa Redgrave wore an elegant black number and her daughter Joely Richardson wore a slinky navy dress both by Catherine Walker.
However, Best Actress winner Carey Mulligan chose a monochrome dress from French label Vionnet. This decision was heavily criticized by the Telegraph’s Fashion Editor, Hillary Alexander who said that Mulligan "failed to get a pass mark in fashion" after failing to fly the British flag for fashion.
The Baftas saw many stars such as Romala Garai, Saoirse Ronan, Trudie Styler, Audrey Tautou and Twilight star Kristen Stewart ditch the traditional long gown for shorter hemlines. Despite the shorter trend, Kate Winslet, Carey Mulligan, Kristin Scott Thomas and Anne Marie Duff all opted for the more traditional longer length gown.
There was a clear injection of colour at this year’s awards with Audrey Tautou arriving in a pink Lanvin dress, while a pregnant Anne Marie Duff looked blooming in a red Alberta Ferretti number. Nude tones were also popular, as seen on Jamie Winston and Claire Danes.
Will these trends be replicated at the Academy Awards? Paddy Power is offering odds on the colour of the dress the Best Actress wears:
Black 9/4
Pink 3/1
Blue 4/1
White 5/1
Orange/Peach 8/1
Red 8/1
