Online betting odds for BBC Sports Personality of the Year

This year has seen some exceptional performances from some of the best sports idols in the world. There has been immense speculation over the last month or so as to who will be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and now that the shortlist has been released it is time for bookies to get the real betting going!
Online bookies Sky Bet have priced Formula One World Champion driver Jenson Button at 4/6 favourite, with world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis backed at 9/2 second favourite, followed by third favourite heavyweight boxing champion David Haye priced at 5/1.
However, there is one sportsman who has been listed in the top 10 and as a result has had an extremely positive reaction making bookies slash there odds. Ryan Giggs looks a very good bet and was once priced at 100/1 with online bookies William Hill before they were forced to shorten his odds to 5/1.
A spokesman from William Hill explained, “Very few punters fancied Ryan Giggs seriously to win the Award before he made the final ten, at which point we made him a 20/1 outsider, but since then he has been backed as though defeat were out of the question - I've never seen a contender's odds slashed like this before”.
Ryan Giggs is the first footballer to reach the top10 since Steven Gerrard in 2005 and the pressure seems to be putting a lot of strain on the bookies. Tim Reynolds from Sky Bet explained, “It's not surprising to see the three British world champions, Button, Ennis and Haye dominate the betting but it’s Ryan Giggs who has been the best supported since the list was announced. Giggs was as big as 33/1 on Monday but due to the weight of money we’ve seen in the last 24 hours he’s now the 11/2 fourth favourite with us."
