O’Sullivan eases to third World Championship
6th May, 2008
Ronnie O’Sullivan made it look fairly easy against Ali Carter on Sunday evening to claim his third Snooker World Championship title. ‘The Rocket’ had already assumed an almost unassailable 16-8 lead going into the final session, and needed little persuasion to take the final two frames needed for the title.
The win means he becomes the fourth player to win the UK Championship, world title, and number one ranking spot in a single season. On the way to the win he fired a superb 147 maximum-break against Mark Williams, and also claimed five of the 10 highest breaks of the tournament.
Semi-final opponent Stephen Hendry praised his game as “snooker perfection” after beating him 17-6 despite behind three frames behind at an early stage. O’Sullivan did not reproduce the form in the final, but it wasn’t needed against a jaded Carter, who struggled in the long tournament.
Unsurprisingly, O’Sullivan has been installed as favourite to win the 2009 World Championship, at 10/3 with BetterBet. Find the best odds on the World Championship 2009 here.
