Newcastle earn vital point at Birmingham
18th March, 2008
After a run of four straight defeats, Newcastle United travelled to Birmingham knowing that they must pick up points sooner or later to avoid relegation. After going 1-0 down to a first-half McFadden strike it looked like another defeat was on the cards.
Newcastle came out strongly and dominated the second half and soon got their reward as Owen grabbed an opportunistic goal in the 56th minute. No other goals meant the sides shared the points, leaving Birmingham two points above the drop zone and Newcastle two points above them. The result also means Keegan is still winless in his second go in charge of Newcastle, which now stretches to nine games.
As a result of the game, Birmingham moved from 4/1 to 7/2 to be relegated, whilst Newcastle has lengthened from 4/1 to 5/1 with the bookmakers according to our odds comparison service.
