Murray to employ ‘team’ of experts
15th November, 2007
After splitting with his coach, Brad Gilbert, on Wednesday, Andy Murray is set to employ a team of experts to guide him through the next stage of his career. Murray’s agent Patricio Apey told the Guardian how the British number one does not plan to employ a direct replacement for the American coach: "We're going to take a completely different approach to things. Fitness will be a big part of it and it may be a rotating team, with people coming in to give specific advice." He also told how Murray wanted the input of a "mentor, someone who has been there and done it all before".
It has been hinted that Murray’s coach as a teenager, Leon Smith, and Louise Cayer, who has been working with his younger brother Jamie Murray, will have some input in the new set up.
After working together for 16 months, Gilbert helped Murray on his way to a career-high world ranking of number eight, taking two titles along the way. Talking about the split, he said: "I'm the sort of guy who likes a lot of people around me. Sometimes when it's just one-on-one with the coach, it can get quite stressful and a little bit stale. It's just much more fun travelling around the world because it can get quite lonely sometimes and to have a lot of people around you just makes you feel a little bit more at home, when you're away."
Murray now ranges from 14/1 up to 22/1 to win Wimbledon 2008. The odds on favorite for the title is the world number one Roger Federer, who can be picked up for around 8/11. All the odds are provided by our free live odds comparison service.
