Murray into last 16 of Pacific Life Open

19th March, 2008

Andy Murray has progressed to the last 16 of the Pacific Life Open with a three-sets victory over Ivo Karlovic. The Scot was again less than impressive at certain points during the match, losing his cool at crucial deciders.

The British number one did manage to hold his nerve to close out the match 7-6 (9-7) 6-7 (3-7) 6-3, but the game was litereted with mistakes and short rallies. Murray will now face Tommy Haas in the fourth round, who beat Spaniard Vardesco in a similar fashion.

Davydenko was the only big name to be dumped out of the tournament early, beaten easily by American Mardy Fish 6-3 6-2. The home favourite’s reward is a fourth round tie with Leyton Hewitt who beat Mikhail Youzhny, from Russia, in two sets. Elsewhere Ferrero came out on top after a gruelling three set win over Mario Ancic.

Murray now moves into fourth favourite at 12/1 with Betfred, with Federer (evens), Djokovic (3/1) and Nadal (8/1) ahead of him.
