Murray gets first round Monte Carlo Masters victory
21st April, 2008
British Number one Andy Murray has secured his place in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters after defeating Spanish entrant Feliciano Lopez. Despite it being a narrow 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win, Murray’s tennis was calm and he finished the match efficiently.
The first set went to a tie break which Murray edged thanks to a loose Lopez backhander, with Murray showing patience and beliving in his greater ability.
The second set saw Murray break in the first game and begin to dominate the set, before they swapped breaks to leave the set in the Scot’s hands. He duly abliged and took the final set 6-4. Murray will now face Nicolas Mahut of France in the next round, for which he is 8/15 favourite. Murray is also 10th favourite to win the competition at 40/1 with Better Bet, a price which should be worth backing with a view to lay in one or two games’ time.
