Murray claims ATP Masters
4th August, 2008
British number one Andy Murray has reached a career-high sixth in the world rankings after his victory at the Cincinnati Masters.
The Scot beat world number three Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 23 minutes, displaying some of the best form of his career. He had only last week beat the fellow 21-year-old at the Toronto Masters.
The Serb had beaten the most in-form player in the world and potential future world number one Rafael Nadal to reach the final, and headed into the match against Murray having never lost against him until last week’s tournament.
After the match, Murray said: "I think I have the game to win a Slam. My results here show I have the potential to do it. I've started to play more consistently in the bigger tournaments. And winning my first Masters event makes a big difference to my confidence.”
The next Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, starts in two weeks time, and sees Murray fourth favourite in the betting at odds as low at 15/2. The best odds on Murray to win are 11/1 with bet24. It will be an unusual Grand Slam for Federer, starting as second favourite at 9/4 whilst Nadal is generally available at just 7/4.
Looking ahead to the Olympics, the odds are fairly similar for most players, except Federer will start as favourite at 7/4, with Nadal at 2/1. Djokovic looks too short to back at 7/2. Use our free odds comparison service to find the best bets, odds and betting on all tennis and sporting events.
The first round gets underway on August 10th, with the finals to be held on the 16th and 17th.
