Murray Closes in on China

1st November, 2007

Andy Murray's goal of reaching the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai remains on course, after a comfortable victory over Fabrice Santoro. For a brief period it looked as if the Frenchman would dispose of Murray in the same way as third seed Novak Djokovic, beating him in straight sets yesterday. The crowd favourite cancelled out an early break in just the fourth game, but then failed to capitalise, losing the first set to the Scot 6-4.

In the second set, Murray broke serve in the first game, and went on the break to love in the third game to make it 3-0. Santoro never then threatened as Murray went on to serve out the game with ease. Murray now finds himself in the quarter-finals, along with Nadal, Robredo and Baghdatis, and the winners of Blake v Gasquet, Berdych v Ferrer, Federer v Nalbandian, and Haas v Youzhny. Unsurprisingly, Federrer is favourite for the title, at about 0.82, with Murray third favourite at a huge 11/1. Haas is unfancied at 74/1.
