Most Popular Thing To Give Up For Lent Odds
18th February, 2010
After stuffing our faces with pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, it is now officially Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter in the Christian calendar. Traditionally, lent is the season of reflection and preparation before the Easter celebration, marking Jesus’ sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days and is marked by Christians fasting from food and festivities.
However, Christians observe lent slightly differently in the 21st century and use it as a time for prayer rather than a time to fast for the whole of lent. Instead, people surrender a particular thing in their life such as their favourite foods or smoking.
Paddy Power are offering novelty bets on what the most popular vice will be that Christians give up during this time and will be decided by the results of the Millward Brown Lansdowne Market Research omnibus survey (05/04/10).
Odds for the most popular Lenten abstentions are as follows:
Chocolate 7/4, Facebook 2/1, Twitter 3/1, Alcohol 6/1, Red meat 8/1, Tobacco 10/1, Betting 12/1, Playing lotto 14/1, Eating out 16/1, Working 18/1, Sex 20/1, iPods 20/1, Going to mass 20/1 and mobile phones 20/1.
