More Premier League Betting and Odds and Tips 2008/2009
With the start of the new Premier League season less than a month away, the betting is hotting up in plenty of markets. For the outright winner of the Premier League, there are some surprisingly big long-term movements in the odds of the ‘Big Four’.
Outsiders Arsenal in March were second favourites to take the title in 2008/2009, as short as 3.3. They are now available for over 7.0, with injuries and player departures really taking their toll. Liverpool have always been the least favoured of the four, floating from 7.0 to over 8.5 in July. Some think that Arsenal may represent some value, as their demise last year can be partially blamed on fitness and injuries, a problem they are unlikely to suffer in such a dramatic fashion this season. Liverpool’s odds may be long, but few can seriously consider them making a serious challenge for the title, especially with the lack of signings so far this summer.
Chelsea have remained a very steady 3.5, but have seen their odds slim up recently as significant amounts of the betting is piled behind them. Some solid signings, a good new manager and few players leaving (so far), have seen them actually become the slight favourites on Betfair. The bookmakers don’t agree at the moment, leaving United at odds of around 2.4, and Chelsea at 2.85. United have slipped from 2.2 all the way up to a recent high of 2.9 at Betfair.

The champions will always look good value as second favourite if they manage to slip that far, whilst Chelsea may be a bit of an unknown quantity under their new manager.
Many are suggesting backing United after their difficult first few games, when they are likely to have dropped a few points and their odds will be longer. Similarly, backing Arsenal now before their run of easier games, then laying the bet after a couple of months should yield some decent profits.
