'Miserable' Xmas #1 Odds Slashed

4th December, 2007

Scottish songwriter Malcolm Middleton is set to launch an unusual challenge for the Christmas number one with his single ‘We’re All Going To Die’. The artist has been described as a “miserablist”, and is one half of indie band Arab Strap, who split last year.

Bookmaker William Hill originally gave odds of 1000/1 for it to reach the top spot, but the antidote to the usual festive cheer has been slashed to just 10/1, putting the song just behind Leona Lewis and the Sugababes.

With lyrics like "We're all going to die, what if there's nothing, we'll all have to face this alone", the single might appear an unlikely contender for a Christmas number one. Mr Middleton, 33, said that although his song is not your typical Christmas tune featuring no sleigh bells or choirs of angelic children, there was a still a message of hope: "Christmas is the best time for a song like this to be released into the mainstream consciousness, especially now in 2007. People don't want to be lied to by Cliff Richards any more. It's maybe time they were told what's really waiting for them inside their Christmas stockings."
