Michael Owen heads for the World Cup 2010
9th December, 2009
Owen scored his first hat-trick in four years in last night’s game against Wolfsburg making the final score 3-1, despite Manchester united being left short of 15 of their best players! The win has meant that the team has topped Group B and crushed the German Champions chances in the competition.
Sir Alex Ferguson appeared stunned with the performance from Manchester United and congratulated the team on their achievements and determination, despite Fergusons make shift choice in defence, and in particular praised Owen explaining, “Fantastic. You know what he is. In the penalty box, he’s on the shoulder, making runs across defenders, the timing of the runs is fantastic and I am really pleased for him.” He went on to say, “Michael Owen is one of the best strikers in the last third of the field in terms of his movement, his positional play and also in terms of his finishing.”
The striker has made it clear that he does not want to talk about his potential to be picked for the World Cup team explaining, “I have never liked talking about myself too much, I always prefer to talk about the team. It is nice to score a hat-trick and the last one was probably the best but you can’t do something like that without the team playing really well.” The 29 year old congratulated the team and continued on to say, “A big credit must go out to the other lads, especially in defence given we had so many injuries.”
Bookies are certain that Wayne Rooney is a definite choice for the World Cup and Emile Heskey is always a favourite for Capello’s quest to help England head forward and win the cup, which leaves two places for the remaining players which include the likes of Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Darren Bent, but now it looks as though one of those places will be dedicated to Owen and he will secure a ticket to South Africa after all.
After last night’s game online bookies Ladbrokes have shortened the striker’s odds to 5/4 that Capello will add Michael Owen to his World Cup squad and is priced at 4/7 to be left behind. A spokesman from Ladbrokes explained, “Owen has provided Capello with a timely reminder of what he is capable of. If he can consistently find the net he could still force his way into the squad.”
