McLaren and Alonso part ways

2nd November, 2007

According to the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo’s website, Fernando Alonso has agreed to leave the McLaren Formula One team. After arriving at McLaren only last year from Renault, Alonso has had a year of constant press coverage after a rocky relationship with team boss Ron Dennis and new star driver Lewis Hamilton. Alonso had two years left to run on his contract.

The Spaniards’ next destination remains a mystery, with rumours suggesting a return to Renault, however reports in AS suggested that McLaren would only let Alonso out of his contract early is he moved to one the smaller teams competing in F1. This could mean he would seek a 1 year contract with a team such as Williams, before looking to join Ferrari.

Alonso has since risen to 7/2 to win the Drivers’ Championship in 2008 as doubt over what car he will be driving next season pushes prices up. This years’ champion Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton are fairly inseparable in the bookies’ eyes, both available around evens to take the title at Canbet.
